Self-storage space restrictions?
-
So I'm thinking of renting a self-storage space, possibly to use as an art studio if I can, because I don't have much space to do my work where I live now, and renting so-called "art studios" is extremely expensive on a college student's salary. Does anybody know if that's allowed in self-storage spaces? I would imagine that if I'm not late with the rent, not bothering anybody, breaking anything, and generally keeping to myself that I would be able to do whatever I want in/with the space I am paying for, right?

Answer:
Echoing what Ed Fox said and adding the fact that the zoning is not set up for commercial habitations, therefore no bathrooms for renters on a constant basis. Eventually the owners might be in trouble with the local zone enforcement city officers. It is very doubtful that a self-storage facility would allow you to set up shop in their place of business. Yo might consider renting a garage from a private person that would allow you to rent for the same purpose. Look in your local paper for those that would want to rent their garage. The rent would be about the same as renting a storage facility and you would be in a residential community. You would also be able to set up lights, tables and might have access to the bath facilities if your landlord is there. I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck. "FIGHT ON"

Some storage companies do have commercial space that they rent out. However, sometimes companies have rules against storing paint in their facilities due to the chance of fire. If you're using acrylic paint though that won't be an issue. The ventilation won't be a problem if you're using acrylics paint. If you use oil just make sure you get a ground floor unit that opens to the outside. That should provide plenty of ventilation. You can definitely do what you're hoping to do it's just a matter of contacting your local storage companies and inquiring about it.

You are not allowed to use a self-storage space for other purposes. It is in their contract. If you cant afford to rent warehouse space you could try to rent office space.

Storage spaces have no windows and no ventilation because they are not intended for human habitation
