Council house or privately rent?. I live in a nice council house but i am unhappy here. I want to move?

I want to go back to my roots in Birmingham. I have had alot of people interested in doing an exchange for my house but there is always something wrong with their house. Mainly the location. (Not the areas of birmingham i want) Do i just give up my council place and privately rent a nice place in the right location or hold my horses until a decent mutual exchange comes along? The problem is with privately renting is that its expensive and may not be permanent but i might be waiting forever if i wait for a suitable exchange.Obviously ive got to like the house and the area and they have got to like my house. I dont think i'll be that lucky. Dont know what to do.

Answer:
Since you are in council accommodation, I assume you are on benefits .. you will discover many private landlords will refuse to take you, and those that do may be offering worse accommodation at double the price ... Also, if you give up' your council place they will immediately class you as having 'intentionally made yourself homeless' and refuse to take you back (although you may end up on the (bottom of the) waiting list in Birmingham, if you can prove your roots are there) Stick it out until something comes up .. (I assume you are checking the Birmingham 'exchange' web sites weekly if not daily ?)

Maybe you should mention what area you're trying to leave in case anyone's interested. I want to do the same myself in a couple of years, to escape Birmingham, I just can't move until then. I don't know anyone here and I'd have to find a 2 bedroom place near Brighton or Exeter, where I know people. I expect that I'll find it just as difficult to find a swap myself. Good luck. Of course I may feel different about it in a couple of years but I just don't want to live in such a large city, I prefer more rural areas. I may just buy a truck and live in that. It'd be simpler, no waiting about and I've done it before.

You are clearly on with the mutual exchange process at the moment. At least that saves me the bother of explaining to you what that is and how it works. You seem to like public sector housing and, given the security that goes with it, there would be a lot to give up by now scrapping what you are doing and simply going to a private rental. In one of those, you will have far less in the way of security of tenure and will also not have a landlord that is publicly accountable. In addition, you would also be turning your back on the right to buy if ever you wished to exercise it. Whilst I would hesitate to suggest ignoring the private sector and simply sticking things out, you should certainly bear in mind what you would be giving up. I do not know if you have considered it, but there are two things that you may wish to do to increase your chances of a move. One is to add housing associations to your list of those with whom you would exchange (this is legal and you would not be giving up quite as much security). The other is to contact Birmingham Housing direct, and see if you can make a case to them for a straight offer in your preferred areas. Good luck with it.
