a) you can't get housing benefit if you work and b) you can't get housing benefit for paying off a mortgage anyway - apart from to pay the interest on old mortgages taken out before a specific date in the late 1980s/early 1990s. If you're struggling you could look into getting a different mortgage for a longer term as you pay back less per month if you are replaying over say 30 years instead of 20 years. Also if you have a spare bedroom you could think about taking in a lodger who's rent will help towards the mortgage. You don't need a buy-to-let mortgage if you are living in the house where the lodger lives and whilst this solution may not be ideal it's got to be better than losing your home.

You can't for mortgage payments I'm afraid. Only for renting if you can prove you're on a low income. Your best solutions would either be to take in a lodger, or to sell up and buy somewhere cheaper or rent. If you choose to sell up, you can save having to pay all the estate agent's fees by selling privately using a website such as http://www.thelittlehousecompany.co.uk .

I'm afraid not, housing benefit is only to pay rent not help pay mortgages.. if you are struggling paying your mortgage maybe you could try renting out your property which will pay your rent while you rent a cheaper property until you can afford to pay the monthly mortgage repayments, or alternatively you could seek a new mortgage lender and try to get cheaper monthly repayments

I know a few years ago you could, but only if you were receiving Income Support / Job Seekers Allowance, but this was only if you lost your job and had already been paying a mortgage. They would only pay the interest on the mortgage, not the whole amount. You could get in touch with your local council and see if there's any help available for you.

No your mortgage is voluntary, you Will own the house eventually. Try looking for a better mortgage product and reducing your interest, or pay a lump sum off and shorten the term of the loan. Mortgage payments do not come into means testing at all! Consider having a few months of 'payment break' agree with your lender not to pay them for a few months. Or pay just the interest for a while.

It will depend on how much you earn - if you are considered to be a low income household you will be offered help. However, benefits will not pay all of your mortgage but can pay something towards it. Go to the local council and pick up a benefits form - fill it in and keep your fingers crossed.
