Housing assistants??

My Housing Association Says I Owe £2400 Even Though I constantly receive housing benefit. Any advice?

  • I suffer from muscular dystrophy and i am on a life support machine.. I currently receive a 24-hour care package from Bromley NHS PCT . My previous Housing Association ‘Livability’ was recently taken over by ‘Habinteg’ a new Housing Association. Now the new Housing Association is claiming that I owe them £2400 in rent arrears. I have no recollection of ever receiving a letter from (Livability Housing Association) stating that my rent was not being paid by Housing Benefit and that I was in rent arrears. I have recently contacted the housing benefits to ask them about whether there has been a break in me claiming housing benefit and they said no. It has come to the point that I just do not know what to do. Now my housing association are threatening to take me to court unless I make payments. I am so worried that I cannot eat properly and feel helpless.I really need to sort this situation.

  • Answer:

I would for starters ring up your local Council and if they still say there is no break in your benefit see if they will ring the housing association to explain this. Tell them you are really worried and if they refuse to ring ask them to send you statements of benefit being paid to the housing association. Any further trouble perhaps you could ring Citizens Advice Bureau.....I hope you get on ok x

You need to contact your Care Manager, you should not be worrying about this, there is an obligation for your Care Manager to deal with your benefits on your behalf, call them ASAP. Good luck, stop worrying, if you are entitled to HB then they will pay the shortfall!

Take the stress out of it all and just get in touch with Citizens Advice straight away. They will deal with everything for you. Be prepared to take `all` contact information with you between the Housing and benefits departments. You probably will have to go in a see them but if you phone and make an appointment, it will be reigstered that you contacted them on that date. Good luck.
