Where can you get a 'second chance' bank account?

Can you have medicaid if you have a bank account?

  • So, my grandmother ( 68 ) recently got her a bank account ( it was opened under my mothers name and she open it for her so she can put or Social Security check in it if she needed to. She lives with her son and his wife right now and they are always looking for ways to take money from her and lie about things to get even more money. They "say" they got a letter in the mail saying they need to either have her bank account shut down or have my mother removed from the bank account in order from my grandmother to be able to get medicaid again. I'm just not how true this is and what parts aren't are true. I won't be going over there for another day or two to check the letter for myself so I thought I'd ask Yahoo before I get a chance to check for myself. Any help?

  • Answer:

Yes she can have a bank account. My grandma who is 82, still lives on her oen, she has her own bank account and gets medicaid.

I am the same age as your grandmother and I am on Medicaid. You are allowed to have $2000 in total assets including the bank account without losing Medicaid. You cannot do much legally since her son probably has Power of Attorney in financial and health matters. Your grandmother probably has a joint account with her son.

Yes, she can have her own bank account. They shouldn't be getting any letters on your grandmother's behalf. Whoever - they say - is sending a letter would be breaching grandmother's privacy and would not send letters to anyone. Someone else needs to look at this letter. Your grandmother should be on Medicare. Medicaid may have a limit as to how much grandmother can have in assets. Obviously she doesn't have her own home. But she is allowed to. And a car. I think the dollar limit might be about $2000.00. My sister is on social security and medicare. She takes care of her own business. I don't get letters on her behalf. She has a checking and savings account. Please check on what Medicaid allows. You can google it and find a boatload of information. Her son should not be screwing grandmother out of her retirement.
