How can I close my bank account down?

  • I have a Halifax Cardcash account, I'm 17 and I've had it for 2 years. I want to close it because I no longer use the account and has been left dormant for 1 year with 45p in their I don't owe any money because I am to young to qualify for an overdraft. I bank with Santander because they are a better bank to be with. I walked into my local branch and said they couldn't close a card cash account down at the branch so I was given a phone number to ring. Just rang it and they said they don't close accounts down over the telephone you have to go into your local branch. I said I did this and was advised to ring the number I was given. They still couldnt help me. Now I'm left with an unwanted account which I cant close? How do I go about this?

    Go to your branch and explain what has happened. If they still insist they can't do it, ask to see a more senior member of staff - and insist they ring their Head Office to find out how to carry out this rare, difficult and nearly impossible task of closing an account with 45p in it. It is worth persisting - having odd little accounts hanging around can damage your credit standing in the longer term if you have too many!

dormant accounts dont automatically close, they stay open. Your best bet is to ring customer services, if they wont action it then ask to make a complaint, once the complaint is made it wont take long for them to get the account closed. Hope this works!

Draw out what you have in there and thats it, it should close down automatically if its dormant for 6 months. Or simply go into the bank and tell the staff you want to close it down.
