Is cooking school worth the money?

Do you remember your first job, how much money you made?

  • Yes, I am a female. I did not make much in the cotton field, two dollars per hundred. I started bleeding, had to quit. Some thing or someone got into the car, ate our food. I guess the social club will not want anything to do with me due to pulling bolls in the cotton fields, or how poor I grew up. I guess that is why being poor is so painful. I worked so hard, so very hard to escape poverty, and right back in it. Actually had some decent threads for a while. "Threads," that is slang , old slang, which I never used, for clothes, and a decent place to live. Then I worked in an all night diner. Sun down to sun up. I think I made three dollars a shift. Couldn't stay there because had no transportation. Cost too much to drive there, no more than I made was not worth it to buy gas.. Then I worked in a drug store, same drill. Same type pay. First real job I made $220 per month. After state, local, federal tax, I had $180. At first I boarded with some people. Had to buy some things, then moved into an apartment, had rent, and all that, gro., car payment, car insurance. I paid all of it. I figured out I had about forty dollars when it was all done, and that is not with expensive groceries. That is forty dollars when I paid the minimum for what I required... I was supposed to tithe from that. Didn't always. Started out tithing, not much encouragement, by that I mean positive encouragement to do so., I was very very young and had never had money much at all before but a very very little only school lunch money which I tithed on. Or an occasional ten dollars or so if I needed something. That was rare. I never asked for money from my folks. I figured if they had it they would have given it to meWe were not rich. I never thought I was poor. I saw many things when I went to work, and I wanted a lot. I bought some stainless cookware etc. I wanted a lot of things such as clothes, and I bought some. My husband started sending me some money. Married the guy I had been dating for four years. I broke up with him once due to simply being not ready. I felt rich. He sent around what I brought home, I believe. was close to what I made. He was overseas in a combat zone.Believe it or not, I bought him a whole new wardrobe. Sent him some nice gifts. Paid cash for these. .I sent him two checks for when he went on R and R. Think it was about five hundred. From his money. I thought of it as his money. When he came home, I had a paid for car, handed it to him, no bills, handed him a wad of cash, could account for every dime he sent, actually gave him back a lot of it. in cash, and the rest in clothes, etc. He was so skinny. We both were about starved. I ate a lot of dry cereal. A lot, and a lot of sugar before he came home. .I had to go to the doctor twice. Once because I had an injury from an accident, once due to some problems. He said I was anemic. Think that is the story of my life. I would buy junk food. I know I should have bought real food, but as I said , not much motivation. Cheap stuff. That was a long two years. He came home and we left. I was so glad to go. Long long two years. We both gained weight when he came home.. I cooked and cooked and cooked, tried new recipes, everything. He almost got fat. Had to cut it down cooking all that.. That was my intro to the work force. First real job I stayed two years. We moved when he came home and transferred out of state.

My first job was at an amusement park working on one of the rollercoasters during the summer. I was 17 and we were paid LESS than minimum wage because our jobs were considered "part-time seasonal." It was fun, though, and I'm glad I worked there. Great memories.
