What are some of the best ways you have used to save money??

What are some of the best strategies you have come up with to save money at home? We have gotten married this year, moved, and bought a house and have to pay our first years taxes on the house, plus taxes on my car so I am in need of some ways to save money. We started by shopping at smaller grocery chains w/ discount food such as aldis, recycling leftovers instead of wasting them, limiting out entertainment, instead of going to the movies, we rent them and it costs a third less, limit our eating out and use less gas because we take the highway everywhere (which is due to location more than by choice), I have nieces and nephews which I always buy a lot of stuff for and I have had to stop spending money on them and I was just wondering what are some of your strategies in your own home to save a couple pennies?

Answer:
I have direct deposit of my paycheck, and at the same time I have a certain amount deducted and put in my savings account at my credit union. I buy a 1 year CD every time I have enough accumulated to buy one with good interest. I don't miss the money when it goes into the savings without my even seeing it. You'd be surprised at how quickly you accumulate a nest egg.

Make a grocery list and stick to it. Plan your menus out. It isn’t necessary to have meat for every dinner. Try beans and corn bread, egg salad, or tuna salad, grilled cheese and soup, for some meals. Cut back on junk food and eat fruit, popcorn or other more nutritious foods. If you buy bottled water, buy a water filter. Cell phones are cheaper than land lines in the US. Do a monthly budget. I use Excel. Look at what you spend and evaluate where you can cut back realistically without feeling overly deprived. Buy clothes at the end of the season. At that time they are often 75% off. Shop the sales for Christmas year round. Don’t throw away unwanted items. Donate them for tax receipts.

Simple: spend less than you earn.

try a credit card that gives cash back on everything and gas. ive already saved hundreds using CC on purchases i would have made anyway. open new accounts that give rebates (bank accounts) and keep the rebates. banks want your business and will pay you for it. open 5+ % yielding account. interest made is interest saved. try citibank.com or wamu.com trade stocks with your financial adviser. besides more potential income, an adviser will help you with a plan.

I pay for almost everything in cash or check, I have one credit card which is for emergencies only, it doesn't "save money" per say but it really limits the impulse buying when you have to plop down 20s for everything. Energy efficiency is always good in the long run for saving money, some CFL bulbs around the house will pay for themselves in a couple of years and insulation is pretty cheap and easy to put down, really saving cash if you live somewhere really cold (like I do in Michigan) Online Bill pay, will save money on stamps and generally there are benefits for paying totally up front for things like insurance. I always ask myself before buying something, how much use will I get out of this item in the next 6 months, if I can foresee one instance, I put it back, if its something I can see myself using a lot, I go ahead and buy it. Planning a shopping day once a week, for me, gets me groceries, equipment, and anything else I might need for the coming week and keeps the multiple trips to the store to a minimum. Buying in bulk, why do I own six pounds of peanut butter? Because it doesn't go bad in the time I buy it, and it tastes the same in 6 pounds or 6 oz version.

I know a couple who had a savings contest. They each kept track of how much money they could save via coupons and sales and competed. you can also get online and compare the new dvd release list with the local library reserve system online. Instead of browsing the shelves you can reserve new releases. you get added to the end of the list, but if you do this enough you'll always have some rolling in, and it's free. The only hard trick to library dvd's is knowing what to request, but use the internet for reviews and recomendations. even small libraries have more than are ever on the shelves because patrons have them out so much, or you can look into an interlibrary loan system. Thrift stores, try the local ones and find one you like. my mom is always getting things there, All of my kitchen wares (nice, matching stuff collected over many visits) and many great toys for the grandkids... also all my work pants... really, it's crazy what you can find there if you know what you're looking at and walk through frequently. Also, in college I noticed foods that are closer to being ready to eat cost more, so pay attention to that, not just the brand or the store. I always loved leftovers that packed well for lunch instead of the next nights dinner. Or, if you have a microwave at work, with a little practice most any leftover can be made enjoyable there. I hardly ever eat out, because it's so expensive, so you could make it a reward on savings goals? have a dish you can toss all your change in. never use change, always bills. This way, if you roll the change you have money that seams to come from no where (ok, it worked for me, not for everyone) or change you can put towards something like eating out?

Sounds like you may be from outside the US and I am in California but one way I have saved is to stop buying coffee at Starbucks (or simular); stop buying fast food and taking lunch to work that is made at home. Another way to save a little is to turn down the heat way low and snuggle with your honey!

clip coupons from magazines & newspapers Throw your small change into a jar every night Budget for birthdays and holidays Pay off credit cards every month. Only use banks that pay interest. Better yet, look into credit unions, ie: Patelco for savings, cd's & checking accounts. Turn off the lights when you leave the room! Take shorter showers. Turn water off whil you're soaping up. Water garden early AM. Install drip system on timer. A penny saved is a penny earned! Take your lunch to work. Stay away from Starbucks!
