How can I cut back/stop spending money on stuff I really just don't need?
-
I feel bad about spending all my money. I feel I should put some of it in saving, but being a teenage girl, I want to spend my money on accesories, shoes, clothes that I wear once. maybe twice. I just recently bought a "really cute stuffed dog" for $35. My parents give me most of my money, so I feel really bad on spending it on such stupid things. I try not to spend money when I go to the mall with my friends, but I always see stuff I "must have" and buy it, and that starts my shopping spree for the day. I can't just stop going places where I spend my money, because that is where my friends and I go. I don't want to have to stop going to the mall. I love going to the mall. So I don't want the answer, just stop going places where you spend money. I also don't want- Just don't bring your money. Then, I always end up begging my friends for money, and they give it to me. It's like I have a addiction to shopping. HELP ME PLEASE?!?!

Answer:
It's the feel-good factor of getting something you like that is so powerful. You could get a different good feeling by channelling some of your time into helping others - even look on it as a challenge - bring your friends on board, it would be good for them too - you could do it together, as a team - there are bound to be charities or organizations somewhere near you that would welcome enthusiastic volunteers. You are a teenager, so haven't quite found the Real World yet - where grown-ups pay their own bills, and work to find the money. If you were to find a part-time job, you could be spending your own money... And perhaps then you could buy something your parents would like, to thank them for their generosity all these years... You are already aware that the spending is out of control. That is the first step in tackling the problem. Could you invert this into How Much Can I Save? Good Luck!!

Don't ask a question and then tell us how NOT to answer it. Get a job; when you see how hard it is to earn it yourself, you won't spend it so freely.

I went through this... I spent every penny on clothes. Now I control myself... but i'm not a teenager anymore... I'm saving for my future now. I put 50% of my paycheck away and budget the rest of my money... so there is a certain amount of "fun" money but I can choose how I spend it. Gotta be honest I miss clothes... and style.

Don't go to the store, and stop looking at things.

The habits that you develop now are going to follow you into adulthood. And, as an adult, the consequences are much more costly. I would suggest the following: Everytime you get money, even if it's a dollar - save some of it! Open up some type of savings, IRA or money market account to house the money you are saving. Over the years, you will have THOUSANDS if you do this. Create some long term and short term goals. Maybe you can save up to buy yourself a car or something really nice. Don't waste money on small things. If you are going to spend, make it worth your time.

Set a budget for yourself every month. Say you get 200 bucks every month. Spend 40 clothes 50 food 25 extras 30 gas 50 for savings Put your savings in a good bank to get interest. Good Luck!!! Trust me your savings now will really help u in the future!!!

Unfortunately the two answers you don't want are the correct solutions to your problem. My girlfriend has the same problem as you do, and she deals with it by setting aside a certain amount of money each month strictly to save - money she doesn't bring with her. That way, if she overspends, she forces herself to scrape by for the rest of the month. (Actually, I usually end up paying for her if she does that.)

Pick a style of clothes and buy only things related to that. Buy two completely new pieces and buy the rest to go around those at yard sales, clearance, goodwill, church rummage, and make some of your own. Have you ever watche dthe American classic "PRETTY IN PINK". You should. There is so much to that movie but just focus on the fashion for now. You don't have to be rich to act like a movie star. That's fun. Then when you outgrow that style do the same with another.

Ok serious answer: If you find yourself in a situation where you found something that you really want, remember where to find it, give it a day or two and if you still feel that you still want to get it, then do so. But to really avoid spending unnecessarily, simple... Don't go to the mall and try getting a job at McDonalds, this way, you'll feel how hard it is to get money and much more spend it.
