What is advisory discretionary fund?

What is the difference between an Asset Allocation Fund and a Target Date Fund?

  • I think the main difference is that an Asset Allocation Fund changes in order to remain static (stable) and a Target Date Fund does not. A Target Date Fund becomes more conservative as it reaches a person's retirement year. Another would be that Asset Allocation Funds is considered more aggressive. Is all this correct? Thanks!

  • Answer:

Yes a "target" fund is an adjustable "asset allocation fund".... as each year goes bye... the fund becomes more conservative. An "Asset Allocation" fund generally adjusts to the managers perception of the market, there is no target date. I would advise a friend if they wanted a simple way to invest to go with the T Rowe Price Target Funds. I would never suggest a general Asset Allocation Fund. I simply don't trust or like them. (Personally I'm not in any "target Fund" or "Asset Allocation Fund"). I also don't like Indexed Target Funds. Some indexes beat active managers over the long haul... others don't. I think these are weak funds.

You are correct but I do not recommend either. It does not take a genius to build a diversified portfolio of index funds and you will save a lot of expenses. Those funds you mention have layers of expenses you do not need to pay. You can do it yourself and be money ahead with separate ETFs if investing lump sum or with no-load mutual funds if dollar cost averaging over a long time.
