I want to travel after college. Will they defer my student loans longer?
-
I want to travel outside of the US for 6 months to a year after I am finished with college. If I tell my lenders that I am going to travel, or going to school in the EU, will they defer my loans longer? What if I make up some story, or if I were to create a nonprofit organization and say it is something like peace corps. Or what if I stay permanently? I will make up just about any story. I would prefer not ruin my credit by defaulting, just in case I need that at some point. Oh, one more thing. On a Roth IRA, distribution is tax free for a person over 59, and can withdraw the full amount all at once, right?

you can ask for a deferment for many reasons, one being unemployed, one economic hardship if your not making a good amount of money, medical, a lot ive been defering mine for 4 years now...

You can get them deferred but accrued interest over the deferral will be capitalized.

There are several reasons to defer a student loan, and if you are travelling on some sort of program, that may likely qualify for a deferment. If you are going on vacation then I doubt they will accept it. Volunteering with the Peace Corps works, as does getting certain jobs with the federal government. You have to be 59 and six months old before you can withdraw penalty free from a Roth IRA, and yes you can take it all out at once, tax free.
