How do I stop buying things?

I am an impulse buyer. how can i stop myself from buying unnecessary things?

  • Answer:

Leave your credit/debit card/s at home and only take the amount of money that you'll actually need. That way, you'll only buy what you intended to buy, instead of the random "Oooh pretty" things.

dont bring money with you unless you know your buying something you need, going to the store to buy a book for 20 dollars then bring 22 so you can buy it and pay the tax and thats it. also leave credit cards at home and believe me this seriously works if you dont believe me then please give it a try at least once

Here are some ideas, not necessarily in any particular order. 1) Wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap yourself with it each time you're about to make an impulse buy. 2) Figure out what state of mind makes you want to impulse buy. For example, do you want to buy stuff when you're upset, depressed, scared, or because you have low self-esteem? KNowing this, you might be able to control it more, possibly by not going shopping when you know you're feeling this way. Also, think of ways to improve these emotional conditions. 3) Make a plan. Write out on a piece of paper how much money you have, how much money you earn, how much money you'd like to save, and keep a tally of all the money you spend on bullshit impulse buys. If you have greater plans for your money (i.e. you're saving up for something, or you want to pay off your debts), and you know how much you're pissing it away, you're more likely to spend it more wisely. Oh yeah, and finally,4) if you *know* that you're about to make an impluse buy (that is, you're aware of it, but you do it anyway bc you feel emotionally compelled to do it), just take a deep breath, exhale, and tell yourself that if you *really* need it, you can always come back at a later time to get it. Alot of times people feel compelled to buy something bc somehow they feel under a time-limit to buy something. I'm thinking the craving will subside once you're successful at resisting the purchase, and you leave the store. 5) read some Karl Marx and become a righteous and humorless anti-capitalist that objects to all things consumerist. :p That is, get your nose or eyebrow pierced, wear soemthing with a Che Guevarra logo on it, or go to grad school in some social science. Just kidding.

Lock extra money in Certificate of Deposit account. They offer them at various banks and have the best interest. However if you try to take the money out early, than they charge you a fee. Also consider just a regular estate savings, It requires a minimum balance of $100 dollars or they charge a fee, and most banks only allow 6 money transfers a month from these accounts if you do it electronically. Therefore slightly limiting your spending, but not completely stopping it like a CD would do. Usually when I don't want to spend money but want to waste a few hours I will go to the casino. I can usually go in with $30 and leave 6 hours later, sometimes with no money left, sometimes with an extra $200. I guess I might just play smart but its fun for me at least. And 6 hours of entertainment is totally worth $30 for me. And right now I am traveling on a savings, and I like to spend on ebay. So it is really hard for me not to spend. But I really CAN'T. So, yeah, it takes some restraint. Good luck!

When you go to a store, have a list of exactly what you need, and try to bring as little extra money as possible while shopping.

use cash money only, and being an impulse buyer isnt bad, you just might want more stuff then other people, but seriously use cash money and dont use any form of plastic, it is un needed.. have fun...
