Why has my debit card been cancelled (no longer valid)?

So I tried buying some groceries tonight and it said (You're card has been cancelled please refer to branch). So then I thought damn someone must of spent all my money so I went back home and checked online but still have the same amount of money as the other day and no sign of transactions. I assumed this was a mistake with the machine so I decided to go to an ATM to withdraw some money but it said "your card is no longer valid, please contact branch blah blah". I'm confused, I have money on my account, no signs of transactions and its been cancelled and no longer valid. Any ideas why? It's really bugging me. PS: it's late, nearly midnight which is why i cant sort out this card situation right and I'm exhausted.

Same thing happened to me. Someone hacked a merchant's computer and stole card information. The bank caught it when two nearly simultaneous transactions occurred. They cancelled the card after the pin number was entered incorrectly. Call your bank in the morning.
