What is the minimum salary a person can live off of?

  • My dream job is to become a zoo keeper. However, zookeepers don't have a large salary (around 27,000). At all. My mom thinks the idea of following that career is ridiculous, and has expected me to make at least 70k! I doubt the salary of a zookeeper will be enough to live off of, even for a single person living in an apartment. Out of curiosity, what do you think the "minimum" salary is a person can live off of?

    Depends on where you live. If you rent a apt cost $700 monthly and all the bills can keep it low to $100 per month. It will cost you $9,600 per year. $2,7000 is before or after tax? I assume after tax, you still can get $2,1600. So $21,600 - $9,600 (rental and bills). You still have $12,000 annually. $1000 per month is not bad, right? And besides, it is not hard to make 70K per year! Most of my friend has that much...again, depends on which state you live!

Um, I would love to make 27,000! My husband, me, and our 3 (soon to be 4) kids live off about $21,000 yearly. If it's your dream job, go for it. I'm sure you'll get raises along the way, and if you really want it, you'll find a way to make it work! Oh, and we rent a house, paying about $550 monthly, plus all the bills, own our own vehicle, pay about $600 monthly in groceries, and the only help we get from the "government" is WIC. So it IS possible!! Good luck with whatever you decide!

After having done both... a job you LOVE is worth more than the hefty wage your mother THINKS you need... Do what will make you happy!!! I'm lucky that now I have a job I ADORE and am making more than I need to... 3 years ago I was surviving (decently, not hand and mouth) on less than $12,000 a year... It can be done!

How do you think zookeepers survive on their salary and perhaps even feed a family? It will all depend on your lifestyle. If you cook your own meals, bring your lunches cooked from home, and have a minimum nightlife, you may be able to live your dream of becoming a zookeeper. Your mom was perhaps concerned about the investment made in your education and for you not to earn enough to recoup what she spent for you. There are lots of other jobs that pay miserly but the rewards is in the feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment. It is up to you to decide which is better, a fulfilled life or a great paying job. For a man, I think you should consider your mom's advise. If you are a lady, you may meet a man who might allow you your dreams while being the bread winner.

I have - very left wing -- friends who are living on $9000 a year to prove it can be done. I think they are on year 5 or 6. The median -- typical -- US income for a family of 4 is something like $45,000...so your mom maybe smoking crack (being unrealistic). The Top 10% of households make at least $110,000 a year. The Top 1% make upwords of $250,000 a year.

I could 'live' of the $200/month I spend for food. I actually live on about $26,000/year. That includes my mortgage payment. ANY job you LOVE is better, and in the long run will earn you more, than ANY job you hate. Your MOM means well, but it is YOUR life.

Depends where you live. Cost of living is all over the map in the U.S. Ignore your mom, do what you love to do and you will NEVER work another day in your life. Good luck
