How To Find Eps Result?

For finding Earning per share of common stock (EPS), how do I find the outstanding # of share?

  • ACC101, EPS = net income - preferred dividends / number of shares of common stock outstanding. I was only given these information:Per share of common stock: 2005- net income: $1.81 (in thousand) and dividends: 0.30 and 2004: net income $1.49(in thousands) and dividends: 0.28.How would I find the number of shares of common stock outstanding to find the EPS if that information is not given?

  • Answer:

Maybe I'm missing something here but you are already given EPS...caps are my emphasis.."PER SHARE OF COMMON STOCK: 2005 net income $1.81 (in thousands)"..."2004: $1.49(in thousands)" net income per share IS EPS...

You are looking at the wrong place. The quantity of outstanding share could be obtained by: The Market Cap. / The stock current price. However, if you know the company's total earning, you could obtain the quantity of outstand shares by: The total earning / Earning Per Share. But you have to trace over the financial history of the former quarter.
