What is the book 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' all about?

Is Rich Dad, Poor Dad a good book for investment advice?

  • I'm currently a college student and in a while I will have to start searching for an internship in order to get a job...i know that the book teaches to work to learn and not work for money so i want to know if what robert kiyosaki teaches is true.....i've always dreamed of starting my own business, being an investor, buying an exotic sports car such as a lamborghini or ferrari and retiring early....would it be possible for this to happen if i just listen to his books?

    Rich dad, poor dad is a decent read with some good lessons. However, it is full of filler and repeated text. Robert kiyosaki does a lot of advertising for his $300 board game and other books in the book as well, he is notorious for that. If you want to read a great investing/business book, read "The Richest Man in Babylon.". Most modern books just take the basic lessons of that book and throw in a bunch of filler. You can pick it up for $10 at barnes and noble. It is considered a must read if you're an investor. It is sort of their bible.

Not on most top ten lists, but not complete crap (like nearly everything else the guy has written). The "trick" about Kiyoski is that his money and influence largely comes from selling rather than what he is selling. Very common and not necessarily bad. However, it can be misleading to deceptive if you take his advice too seriously in areas in which he knows very little. I would start with The Lazy Person's Guide to Investing by Paul B. Farrell to see how it puts Rich Dad in context. You also might want to read The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas Stanley and William Danko to see much more practical case studies in how real wealth is built in America. (hint: no lamborghini's or ferrari's in the driveway)
