Hedge funds operate like mutual funds except you need to be invited to join them. (for the big boys) They are often very agressive portfolios with various investment vehicles included. Can be realestate, gold, stocks etc. The manager usually has more freedom than mutual funds. They are known and tracked and talked about but basically a club for rich people to get richer.

They are vehicles that Wall Street uses to extract more fees for sub-par performance from wealthy people. The normal fee structure is 2% fee and 20% of profits AFTER expenses. The costs can be huge, the profit to the manager is obscene, and (with a very few exceptions) performance is mediorce at best.
