i would advise u to invest the money instead of saving. but be very smart in what u invest in. investment will yield higher profit than savings account. please read the book INCREASE YOUR FINANCIAL IQ by Robert Kiyosaki. this will help you in making decisions about money.

You know what? I talked to my bank they set me up with a great feature. Each time I use my card for a purchase - they move $1.00 to savings for me. Its not much, but its a start. It really is adding up. Started last year around November and already have $200 bucks or so put away. Not much.. but then again $ 200 dollars does not walk around on the street. I would also talk to your bank about ways of doing that - go to different banks as well or talk to a financial advisor. I know these seem like very general ideas but only these guys will better be able to tell you how to maximize your current situation for the future. Don't be shy! They are not gonna bite! Just make sure that you go to a good one. Talk to those people in your life that you know can give you good solid advice. People who invest or save - not people that just look rich because their credit cards are maxed out! Just to save money - I only buy things I need that are healthy for me. No more no less. It keeps me above the red line, and still lets me enjoy life. Instead of going out for dinner or 'party' we stay in and invite friends. I also made sure that when I use credit cards, I use the ones with really really low percentage. I know that we can't always pay off our credit cards at the end of the month so at least use the ones that will charge you the least interest. You will be surprised how many cards you can get and at what percentage if you just call. Capital One is awesome for that - i think i have 5.9 % - maybe there is even better cards out there. Or get a Credit Card at your local grocery store that rewards you with free groceries at the end of the month. If you have a land line and a cell phone - cancel the land line. You'll save. Call different insurance companies to see if you can get a lower rate for your home or car or medical. Cut out certain things like that are nice to have, but are not necessary..... If you kids don't have a part time job - make them get one and invest at least 10% of their pay checks into a savings account of some sort. You should be doing that for yourself as well for retirement. A lot of companies offer to match what you put away into a savings account. This little tid bid of a tip, when started early by a young person - will teach them a lot about saving, and will allow them to retire very very early. In the end - the most important thing you can do is to improve your financial IQ. Check out Rich Dad Poor Dad - he gives some great advice on how to get our of the rat race and become very rich. Most people don't know how to save money - and really saving money doesn't work. Make your money work for you - don't let it sit there. But you have to go out and find out how to do that. My favorite quote from rich dad poor dad was: If you are the smartest person on your "team" or group of friends - you need to find a new team or group of friends. Start small -and in a few years you can go big.. in the mean time good luck

susie orman is really good with advice - buy her book. this is how i save money - get a budget book record all expenses - ie food, insurance, mortgage. stick to a budget make sure you know where your money is going. then cut back - only after you know where your money is going can you begin to save. right now wall street is not regulated so be very careful - until things are under control i am only using fdic. i think there are special tax exempt ways to save for your childs education.
