Check out Peter Lynch's "Beating the Street" -- It's a great book. Basically, when you are buying a stock, you are buying part ownership of a company. Lynch recommends that you keep this idea in mind, and put your money in companies that you know to be high quality. Are you a computer geek? If so, you'll probably know which Internet stocks are more promising than the average person, etc.
