When a stock is de-listed from an exchange, why does Yahoo finance eliminate the ticker symbol the same day?
-
For example, Adobe completed its acquisition of Macromedia just recently, and the NYSE deleted the Macromedia symbol MACR. But Yahoo finance also deleted the symbol, so that a quote search for MACR results in a "no such stock symbol" message. Thus if an investor is unaware that Adobe is the new owner, they are completely in the dark as to what happened to Macromedia. Your competitor at MSN Money Central retains the symbol, and sends you to the page where there is news about Adobe and Macromedia. Why can't Yahoo be kinder to investors?

Answer:
Well, the answer to your last question is... they can if they want to. I don't have the answer to your first question. But I do have a tip. If you get 'no such stock symbol', then do a yahoo web search on the ticker. The first result for MACR was the fiance page, which when click yielded the same result. But, if you click the 'cached' button on the search results, you see the last known good page of that.... so it's the best you can get on Yahoo I suppose. The cached page shows the merger headline, which would point you in the right direction.

Don't vote for my answer. The answer above looks pretty helpful. No further answer is needed, but a second answer is the only way to close the question.
