What's the best wireless insulin pump?

Any advice on getting the insurance to pay for an insulin pump?

  • My wife has used the same Cosmo insulin pump for years, and now it's in such poor shape it has become dangerous to use. She has picked out a new pump for the Animas company, but her Access Plus Insurance is dragging it's feet by creating new paperwork, losing papers, etc. Does anyone have any advice on how to speed up the process? Her insulin pump is held together by duct tape at this point, and it shuts off without warning at times. She's pregnant, both of us are afraid to sleep for fear that the pump will turn off at night or, worse yet, deliver a huge dose of insulin....it's done this twice so far. She really needs a new pump, the insurance is supposed to pay for it, and we don't have the 5 to 8 thousand dollars for a new one. Any advice on how to deal with this situation would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

I suggest that you work closely with your Dr. to get his opinion on how to utilize all resources to get the insulin pump paid for in full. Depending on your income you should explore government help if available. the other poster is right about being nice but pushy. always state you are pregnant and remind them again before you hang up. keep track of all phone calls; name of person, title and time, and every time you fax something, then when you call back if no response, ask for that persons supervisor, then manager and so on. i would suggest that after 1 week and no more response, i would then state you will be hiring an lawyer since if something were to happen to your baby, you will sue them for negligence. normally stating getting a lawyer does not scare a insurance company, but you have a cause for concern, that is your unborn baby. you might want to call your doctor and ask him what would be the consequences if this pump fails on your unborn child? by them stalling on 5 to 8 thousand dollars could cost them many more thousands if you have a problem delivery. good luck and happy baby

nothing's going to work, except being the squeaky wheel. Daily phone calls, lots of faxing paperwork over, scanning and emailing is even better because it's easier for you to keep resending, once the first scan has been done. Just be polite, but cry a bit, about how important this is for her and the baby. Tell EVERYONE on the phone she's pregnant, and you're worried she'll lose the baby, and can they please expedite it, or rush it, or whatever. BE POLITE, but most of the people she'll be talking to are women - and after 2 or 3, or a supervisor or two, DAILY CALLS, someone will have mercy on her and step in and get it done . . .IF SHE"S NICE.
