Will you be able to afford health insurance when the premiums go up?
-
My insurance premiums have skyrocketed in the last 3 years, yet this year the insurance industry will be required to cover pre-existing conditions for children and also for adult children up to the age of 26 (and sometimes longer). I doubt that I will be able to afford the new premiums. When preiums go up, who will be left that can afford health insurance? .

Answer:
Bellevue, you're wrong that's why you get the thumbs down. Johns Hopkins is in my back yard, so you'll never have access to the health care I have unless the system here is completely undermined. And, yes if you make no money then your payroll taxes will be less. And, you're only counting your payroll taxes. You're not counting the roughly three times the amount that your company pays. Sure, your company is paying it and not you, but where do you think American companies would get that additional tax? They're either going to cut payroll (lay people off) or they're going to cut salaries. You can't just expect other people to pay for things, because those other people have to get the money from somewhere. And, health insurance here for the healthy is not expensive at all. A couple weeks ago I could insure an entire 20-40-something family with maternity coverage for about $300-$400/month. Of course I say a couple weeks ago, because those plans are all going away (that plan is gone as of two weeks ago). If insurance companies are going to have to cover every pregnant girl that walks through the door then why cover maternity? I talked to a guy 3 weeks ago about insuring his daughter for $80/month off his group plan. He called me this week to get it done only to find out that children in America can't buy their own plan anymore. So, now he has to pay $200-$300/month to get her on his group plan at work. I also had a client who just sent me an e-mail last week that said, "my insurance went up from $261 to $344. What is that about?" My response...."new health care bill...."

You will be able to afford insurance with obamacare....the problem is you're going to end up with an awful doctor who the government chooses for you and also chooses your remedy while you wait days or even months for an appoitment. All the good doctors (who are already getting screwd by insurance companies) will only accept cash and be available to the upper class. Another reason why the USA is headed towards bankruptcy...

The cost will go up, and many people will not be able to afford it. The best hope is that the law that requires people to purchase insurance will be declared unconstitutional. The claim that the commerce clause can be used to REQUIRE that free people purchase goods or services that they do not want id totally wrong. You cannot require companies to offer additional coverages (even if they are not wanted) and not expect costs to increase. This is just common sense, but common sense is missing from many politicians. If you were to require that every hamburger place include an serving of broccoli with each burger, they would raise the prices of the burgers to cover the additional costs. The end result would be that people would pay more, and a lot of broccoli would be thrown out. Socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried, Even Cuba has decided to lay off government workers and go to a more free market economy. Certain politicians in the USA have decided that they want to have a nanny state controlling everything. This is fueling anger, and is why the socialist democrats are in trouble in the polls, expected to lose the House and perhaps the Senate. Hopefully the damage done can be reversed

We are self-insured and I can barely afford my premiums. My husband needs surgery and we self-diagnosed his issue, therefore it's a pre-existing condition and won't be covered. Guess what I can't get maternity coverage. I'm so $%%$&%$ of this administration. We do all by the book and they dictate our lifes. Really, I have no children and financially I will never be able to have one.

Mine went up 20% this year but not for the reasons you gave. I can't afford NOT to have health insurance. I still have to pay for prescriptions out of pocket. The question isn't if I can afford it, but how *long* I'll be able to afford it.

Actually, they've skyrocketed every year for the last ten years, with no end in sight. Just like the MEDICAL bills. As long as claims keep going up, premiums for the same coverage, ALSO have to go up. BASIC MATH. Unless the 'health reform' gets revoked, eventually, only the very rich will be able to afford private health insurance - just like in Europe, right now, in the countries with 'socialized medicine' or 'universal health care' or whatever you want to call it.

you won't qualify for subsidys that should more than cover the difference? as I understand it there will be a very broad range of subsidization for various degrees of income. personally I like the idea of having a chance to *have* health insurance at all.

In the U.K., *all* of my payroll taxes amount to less than I would pay for health insurance premiums in the U.S. And the health care I've received here is much better. I won't be moving back to the U.S. anytime soon.
The angels have the phone box.
In 2014, everyone will be able to afford it, including everyone who cannot afford it now. Other provisions of the health care reform bill will take effect, which say that: 1) Everyone who is in perfect health and does not use health insurance will have to buy it anyway, and the health insurance companies will be able to use the money that they get from those involuntary customers to pay for the cost of covering the preexisting conditions and to lower the premiums for everyone else 2) If you cannot afford to pay anything, you will get health insurance for free 3) If you cannot afford to pay the entire premium, but you can afford to pay something, then you will get a subsidy from the government, so you will not have to pay more than you can afford

I suppose it depends how high the premiums go, and how much of them my employer will cover. But over-all, I'll be saving money on medical expense, because now my adult kids will be covered, and I don't have to pay for pre-existing conditions.
