How does short term disability work?

How does short term disability work?

  • my aunt has her husband on her insurance, he was laid off and started a new job a couple months ago and then had a heart attack that required a triple by-pass. He is out of work, what income options does he have other than unemployment?

  • Answer:

Short term means He will receive half of his pay until the Dr.says he can go back to work. Mine lasted almost two years. Then they start rehab.to get him back into the work force. Also classes on how to write resumes.Do not take the job classes it just his money being wasted. He better off asking for his lump sum after the Dr. releases him. Money that is his. but, If the company is paying for his Dr. he might have give that -up. I wouldn't if he is gonna have more heart problems down the road. Dr. will let you know. Either he stays on and applies for full disability or After rehab start looking for a job

Usually short term disability will kick in after a certain period of time (outlined in her insurance contract). I think it is generally between 30-60 days from the start of illness/injury. He will need to have a doctor certify that he is unable to work. Once approved, the insurance will pay out a percentage of his usual wages. Your best bet is to give the insurance company a call to get the ball rolling on the paperwork, so he can start receiving benefits sooner rather than later.
