What are my options for my insurance?

What are the insurance options for paying out of pocket for health insurance? NO SPAM?

  • Do you know of a good insurance company that you can buy health insurance from that doesnt cost a fortune? We are a married couple who is expecting a baby (so the insurance will need to cover all three of us, most importantly the baby). I want something to cover us (the two adults) incase of emergency so that we wouldnt be in debt forever because of an accident if it would occur, but I would want a good insurance plan for the baby. I am in PA if that matters... Estimated cost? NO SPAM

  • Answer:

I ran a check on http://www.ehealthinsurance.com using parents age 25 and a Philadelphia average. It may vary depending on the ages of the adults, the gender of the baby, and where in PA you live. The least expensive policy I found was $99.80 per month from UnitedHealthOne, and the most expensive was $830 per month from Aetna. On the other hand, the $99.80 per month plan from UnitedHealthOne was a $10,000 deductible and the $830 per month plan from Aetna has no deductible. If you really just need to avoid a lifetime of debt, and are ok with a modest amount of debt for something major and with paying out of pocket for routine stuff, then get the low cost, high deductible plan. If you do not want any debt and do not want to pay a large deductible, then you may want a plan with a premium of a few hundred dollars per month.

Your family is NOT insurable while you are pregnant. If you have no health insurance through your employer, and you don't qualify for state Medicaid, you're going to be "self insured" for this baby. AFTER the baby is born, a good low/no deductible plan in PA, like Keystone Blue, will run you around $1200 a month, assuming that nothing is wrong with baby. You can cut that in half, by taking on a whopping $5,000 deductible. Your best souce of information for this, is a LOCAL (to you) insurance agent or broker who specializes in health insurance. But I think they're going to tell you the same thing. Sorry!

I don't know PA at all. But most carriers are not going to accept you with a pre-existing condition. Yes, pregnancy is a pre-existing condition that they will deny you for. They know that you will cost them money. You will probably be able to get something after the baby is born (if it is born healthy), but that is because they will be able to charge you for the cost of another person on the plan. While you are pregnant, they only have two people on the plan but the expense of that little baby! But talk to an agent in PA. If there is something that they can get for you, they'll help you. It doesn't cost anything to talk to an agent. They make their money by being paid from the carrier that they find for you.

It IS expensive, although all the talk in Washington about healthcare reform has actually caused the insurance companies to lower their rates significantly. One actually has to wonder which is better, having the healthcare reforms or having the threat of healthcare reforms. Can you believe some people actually want neither? My guess is that most of them are either ignorant or actively benefit from the high costs via stock trading of our nation's well-being.

It all depends on the amount of coverage and co pay you select. You may just get major medical and pay for the office visits and small stuff yourself. You will need to wait for the baby to be born before getting it covered. I hope you have saved up for the birth which can cost $25,000 or more.

I suggest you consult a local insurance agent to get you the right policy because insurers are different state to state.
