  Like in the music industry? Basically, you need to be marketable. Marketable can mean a combination af various things including, musical talent, looks, attitude/personality, entertaining, etc. and can you make money with your talent. Not everyone with a 'golden voice' gets a record deal, becuase just sounding good doesn't sell...there are millions that sound good. Unfortunately, sex sells and entertainment sells. If you can sing, but don't know how to work a crowd people won't come to your shows. If you are homely as hell people won't buy your posters or T-shirts with your picture on it. The music industry is a business and isn't solely based on talent, it's about whether you can make the record label money. I'm not going to name names, but there are TONS of artists that are far from the best talent that I've seen that are selling out stadiums. When you get one, basically you split most of your profits with the record label. The label fronts the costs for everything and they take a good chunk of the profits (typically a smaller band on a record label will make $1-2 a CD or a T-shirt and the record label takes the rest).
