What are my health insurance options as a student?
-
I'm 22 years old and a full-time student at a California State university. Last month and without warning, my dad cut me off of his company's insurance and is refusing to put me back on because he claims we have no relationship and he essentially wanted to be spiteful as he has done since my parents divorced. My question is this: Can he even legally do this? As a full-time student, isn't it my right to be covered by his insurance? I can't get any insurance through my mother as she is unemployed. Because I'm pulling 19 units at school, I can't take on a full-time job to get health insurance. So what are my options? Is there a way to force my dad to put me back under his plan? If not, what should I do? I'm confused and scared because just over a month ago, I had to go to the ER because I broke my nose. Two days later was when my dad cut my insurance. Now I don't even know if that ER visit was covered because he didn't warn me before he cut me off. If someone could please help me figure out what to do in this situation, I would be very grateful!

Answer:
It's up to your dad whether HE wants to put or keep you on your insurance. Call a health insurance broker to find a plan.

Yes, he can legally do it. No one who is at least 18 years old has the right to be on the health insurance of a parent unless that parent wants the person on the health insurance. Your options are: 1. See if CalState offers an insurance plan to its students. If it does, then pay to be on that plan. I do not know the price. Ask CalState. 2. The same as everyone else in California who cannot get insurance from an employer: Purchase a health insurance policy from an health insurance company, either online or through a local agent/broker. For someone in California who is your age, this typically costs $50-$100 per month. There is no way to force him to put you on his insurance. That ER visit should be covered, if you were still on the insurance on the day of ER visit. The most important thing is to get some insurance, whether from the school, the web, or a broker/agent, no more than 2 months after he did what he did. Once you have no insurance for 63 consecutive days, it takes 6-18 months before any insurance will cover any condition that was "existing" (even if undiagnosed) before you got insurance. If you get new insurance less than 63 days after you lost your old insurance, then this waiting period rule does not apply.

Can he even legally do this? Yes Isn't it my right to be covered by his insurance? No, the health care reform legislation allowed parents to keep their children on their health coverage up to age 26. It does not mandate that keep on insuring you. Is there a way to force my dad to put me back under his plan? No, see the above. Keeping you on his insurance is entirely voluntary on his part. What to do? 1. Call an agent, perhaps the agent that writes your auto insurance, he or she can look into your options in securing an individual policy. 2. Look into what health insurance is offered at the university 3. Reduce your credit hours and seek employment where group benefits are offered

You will have to buy your own health insurance if your parents are not willing to insure you. Being a student is meaningless unless your college has a student health plan. The decision to add you to his policy is his. He is not legally required to help you. You are over 18 and he is no longer responsible or obligated. You can pay cash at any county clinic to see a doctor. I suggest joining Kaiser to keep your cost low. The membership is around $100 a month which is less than individual insurance premiums. Please do not go to an ER if you dont have an emergency. The rest of us pay for that because the government gets the bill. Go to an urgent care clinic. Maybe you have to take fewer credits at school and get a part-time job. Starbucks offered health benefits for part-time.
