How often may the depreciation be deducted?

What depreciation am I entitled too?

  • I had a claim on my house earlier this year and the replacement cost value came out to a little over $10,500. The insurance company then deducted $500 for my deductible and another $1,500 for depreciation and sent me a check for $8,500. I had to fire the contractor they recommended because he was doing poor work and taking way too long to finish the repair. I have decided to just finish the work myself with the help of my brother in law, who is a carpenter, and I'm wondering how I go about getting that $1,500 in depreciation from my insurance company or if I'm entitled to it since I'm doing the repair.

  • Answer:

You're still entitled to it, AFTER the repairs are done. When they are, you'll need to contact your adjuster, and tell them to either come out, or submit photos.

Ask the insurance adjuster if it is "Recoverable Depreciation" or "Non-recoverable depreciation" If it is recoverable, you just submit your receipts after the work has been completed and they reimburse you. It's your choice on who you use for repairs and if you do it yourself, that's fine.

you were never getting that $1500 depreciation no matter who did the repair. they gave you $8500. period. that's it - you were responsible for any costs above the $8500
