My employer recently added "Humana Health Insurance" to my pay stub for -$50.00.?
-
My boss has been pressuring me to join our Small Business's Health Insurance Plan after a girl quit recently. They need two employees to be on the plan to offer one and I would be the second employee. I already have Insurance so I declined their offer. That is besides the point... They had been pressuring me and pressuring me for months now to drop my other Health Insurance plan and join theirs. I don't want to join theirs because it is expensive and I couldn't use my current Doctor. My question is why are they pressuring me so much? They claim that they don't benefit in any way but I don't trust them at all. Also on my most recent paycheck stub there was a new line that says, "Humana -$50.00". Humana is the Insurance Plan they tried to get me to join. My paycheck amount didn't change at all so what is that "Humana -$50.00"? Are they using a loophole for a tax credit or something? Any insight would be helpful. Thank you

Answer:
In order to qualify as a small business for health insurance, they may need you in their plan. That being said, they cannot pressure you to take it. I would check the gross payment amount from your stub and not the paycheck amount. In order to deduct $50, they will have needed to increase your gross pay by $50. To have some fun with them, contact Humana directly and say that you have coverage elsewhere and would like to remove yourself from the plan. They may ask for coverage elsewhere, which isn't a problem. Once you are removed from your plan, it is illegal for your employer to reduce your salary. So, you will get $50 (less taxes) added to your next paycheck.

They are pressuring you because they cannot have it with only one person. The boss needs to be on it because the boss cannot get other health insurance for the boss. But the boss cannot be on it unless someone else is also on it. If they cannot get another employee to agree to pay to be on it, then the only way of getting the boss on it is to give it to an employee for free. They finally gave up on trying to get you to agree to way for it, and decided to put you on the insurance and pay for it themselves, so that the boss could have insurance.

They're pressuring you, because if they don't have enough people on their plan, the health insurance cancels. THEY lose their health insurance. Looks like THEY are paying for your health insurance, to keep you on that plan. Looks like they INCREASED your pay by that $50, so that they could deduct it. This could create some problems for you - primarily with coordination of benefits. But if you don't want to be shopping for a new job, you'll probably want to not raise a stink about it.

Yes, I agree. It sounds like they signed you up so they didn't lose their plan. It's not exactly copacetic, but as others have said, if it's nothing out of your pocket then don't worry about it. And, if you've received no card in the mail, then assume you don't have other coverage when filling doctors forms and what not. Don't say, "Well I think I have this other plan....," because then it might matter.

Confront your boss since it sounds like he signed you up and is paying the premium himself.
