What is a structured settlement?

Lawyers..can you change your structured settlement?

  • I have a structured settlement that was setup for me when I was 6 years old because of the death of my father. My mother was the one to set it up. I am now 22 going on 23 years old. I want to change the way it is setup. Is is possible or not? and please dont say to call jgwentworth or any of those people because they are rippoffs. Ive already looked into it.

  • Answer:

Most likely, unless you have an extreme personal situation, you're not going to be able to change the structured settlement. Most of the time when people ask for this, they want to take out cash for a car or a vacation or something - which is the whole point of the structured settlement, to keep you from doing that. If, however, you have cancer, and no insurance, you can likely get the settlement restructured (for an attorney's fee) to pay the medical bills.
