Broken nose years ago. Deviated septum. New insurance. Will they cover?.?
-
I broke my nose years ago and as a result have lived with a deviated septum for 20 years. I didn't seek medical attention for the issue at the time. I now have breathing issues as a result that affect my sleep, heart rhythm, etc. I recently switched insurance and am wondering if they will cover a surgery to repair my septum. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Answer:
Most likely yes. You will need to see an ENT. If he documents that repair of the deviated septum is medically necessary then your insurance will probably cover it. Most deviated septum's happen because of some kind of trauma to the nose. I had a deviated septum repaired a few years ago and my insurance did pay for it. Your first step is to make an appointment with an in network ENT.

Possibly. If you recently did not have medical insurance (meaning that you switched from having no insurance to having this insurance), then they will not cover it, because it is a "preexisting condition". If you had insurance continuously for the last few years, and you merely switched from one insurance company to another insurance company, and there is clear medical documentation showing that the breathing problems, heart problems, etc., are real and are caused by the deviated septum, then they are likely to pay for it. If they merely have your word for it, and the medical evidence is not sufficient, then they will not cover it.

If it's individual coverage then they won't pay for it. But, if it's group they likely will. However, if your nose is crooked, then it'll still be crooked afterwards. They don't break it. If you want it broken and straightened (which is the better way to fix it in my non-medical opinion) then that part of the surgery is going to be out of pocket. The insurance company considers that cosmetic. Talk to an ENT who also does plastic surgery. That's your best bet AND talk to people who have had it done. I have a friend who got that surgery done by an ENT who specialized in ear tubes for kids...so she still had issues afterwards. My ENT (who also does plastic surgery) used to reconstruct faces (sinuses, nasal passages, etc....) for car accident victims. Mine was done really well. No issues and only one upper respiratory illness that's required antibiotics in the last five years. Prior to that I'd get 1-2 every winter.

They will probably cover it if your doctor can show that it is now a medical necessity. Make sure YOU get the OK from the insurance before going ahead with the surgery, don't rely on having the doctor's office check for you. Good Luck

It's going to depend on medical necessity, how long you've had the new insurance, and if it's group coverage or individual coverage.

No. It's not medically necessary.
