Anthem charging my mother for EVERYTHING?
-
My mother had Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield for over a year, before getting Medicare (which she didn't even apply for). She was told that she'd have to drop Anthem, because she couldn't have two health insurers. She did that, and today received a bill in the mail from Anthem for every single medically related thing she had done while under Anthem. This bill totals over $20,000, and I'm just dumbfounded as to how this could possibly happen. She paid Anthem every single month, and I'd really like to know what she was paying for all this time when she was going to be charged for it in the end anyway. Any ideas? Could she have broken some sort of contract by dropping them?

Answer:
Anthem Blue Cross also offers Medicare plans. You should talk to their billing office and find out why. I assume the BCBS was a group plan, and when she turned 65 she had to switch to a Medicare Blue Cross plan.

Answering the last question first: No. She broke some sort of contract by not applying for medicare. An insurance policy is a contract. Every insurance policy/contract in the U.S. says that if you can get medicare, then the insurance only pays for whatever medicare would not have paid if you had applied for medicare. You have to pay for anything for which medicare would have paid if you had applied for medicare.

She should call the insurance broker that she bought the Anthem policy from and ask him/her for help. They retroactively canceled her policy for some reason. They may have expected that some of those bills had gone through Medicare which is why they backed them out.

She needs to call Anthem BC/BS she has proof of all her payments to them doesnt she ? that's not true that she cannot have more than 1 insurance My Mom has 3 different BC/BS policies (free from my Dad being a Police Officer then Sheriff ) AND she has medicare B

If she didn't sign up for Medicare when she was FIRST eligible, well, many private health insurance companies revert to SECONDARY coverage when you turn 65, and if Anthem just realized that, they're entitled to their money back.
