Answer:
Please do not click on that "ehow" link in a previous answer. Those articles are written by people who's main objective is to make money on the click ads and most of those articles have many errors and omissions. Follow Tom Z's advice. In addition, my advice is, after you've gotten the license and the appointments to a company is to have at least 6 months (preferably a year) living expenses saved up prior to starting your sales. 95% of new agents wash out the first year, primarily because they can't afford to live and feed the new business at the same time.

Heather, you don't mention what your background and experience is. Getting the license is only step one. Here is a link to get everything you need to become a licensed agent in the State of Florida: http://www.myfloridacfo.com/agents/Licensure/index.htm The problem is, even though you are a licensed agent, it doesn't mean that you can now sell auto insurance. The next step would be securing an agency appointment with a company that sells auto insurance in Florida. This is easier said than done because insurance companies are very particular about who they appoint to represent them. They almost always require a significant premium volume commitment which can be difficult, if not impossible, for a start up agent. The best way to get started in this line of work is to get a job with an agency that already has existing agency contracts to represent one or more companies. Good luck and best wishes for your success.

First, you go to the FL insurance department website, and buy the study materials to learn the stuff. Then, you sign up and pass a test. Then, you pass a background check. Then, you go to an insurance company and ask them to appoint you, or an agency, and ask them to hire you as a producer.

Where I live, you need to pass an exam. You can do online self-study, or go to school.
