What happens when you cancel a debit card?

Mugged last night after card and pin number stolen, what happens now after card cancellation?

  • I was held gunpoint in the middle of a city-wide celebration and forced to give my PIN. The guys ran off with about 400 dollars worth of money from my debit card. I called to cancel the card that night and then called this morning to find out about re-compensation and they said they can't do anything until tomorrow after the "pending" status is removed from the transaction!?!? Can anyone share with me how this experience is like? What happens? Will I ever get my 400 dollars back?

    Yes, you do a polilce report. It doesn't matter when you do it. But you should. The bank will give you back the $400 after they investigate. Depending on your bank, some banks will give you back your money the next working day while they investigate. Some banks don't. Call your bank today and ask. Good Luck.

Yes, file the police report now. Since you reported the theft within 24 hours of it happening, your liability is limited to I *think* $50, before the report, and NOTHING after the report. It's very suspicious, though, that you were held at gunpoint, and didn't report it to the police, at the time. MOST people would call the police immediately.

Actually it's just PIN. You wouldn't say 'pin number' because that'd be personal identification number number. Oh, and you were mugged at gun point and didn't think to call the police? They'll review the video to see what happened and who made the withdrawal.
