We are both on unemployment and no more insurance?

Has anyone had this problem with unemployment insurance?

  • I filed for unemployment on the 26th of last month (in California), just three days after I got laid off. Filled out the forms, got another form to fill out the week afterward, then got another notice last week saying that by law, they couldn't pay me for the first week of unemployment. Now I haven't heard from the CA Unemployment Office in a week. I tried calling several times but to no avail. On one of my notices, I was told to call the unemployment office because I forgot to fill out something on the form (still can't get to anyone). If I write a letter to the CA Unemployment Office, will I receive a response back? Has anyone else had this problem? Does it mean anything if I don't receive anything from the UI office in a week?

  • Answer:

California's EDD can be quite difficult to deal with, especially over the phone or by mail. I would recommend taking a trip to your local office and talk to someone face to face, things should move fairly quickly if you do. Oh, and the bit about no pay for the first week is a long standing policy.
