Answer:
While cost is an important factor to consider when purchasing pet insurance, you must also make sure the insurance company you pick will provide good medical coverage for your pet's breed. If you don't you may not get reimbursed when the time comes. The 5 important points of coverage are: 1) Coverage for Cancer 2) Coverage for Chronic Disease Chronic diseases are illnesses that have long duration and generally slow progression. Chronic diseases are usually not curable. Examples include: cancer, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and chronic liver disease. 3) Continual Coverage for Chronic Disease If you do not get this coverage, the chronic disease will only be covered in the policy year it was diagnosed, after that, you will have to pay for any continuing medications or diagnostic monitoring yourself. Treatment for most Chronic diseases will last beyond the first year of diagnosis. 4) Coverage for Hereditary & Congenital Diseases 5) Coverage for Diseases that are Common to your Pet's Breed Medical conditions that Bichons are prone to include but are not limited to: skin allergies, bladder stones, patellar luxations, and inherited cataracts, pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s disease (or Cushing’s Syndrome) and hypothyroidism. When evaluating VPI, look at the benefit schedule to see how much you can expect to receive as reimbursement for the diseases above, then ask your vet how much of that reimbursement would cover actual costs. VPI resets their benefit allowances annually. If a condition is not on VPI's benefit schedule then it is not covered. Also, VPI has limited hereditary/congenital coverage. Patellar luxation and inherited cataracts (both are considered hereditary/congenital) are not covered by VPI. If you got your Bichon from a responsible breeder who does not breed Bichons who are carriers of hereditary diseases and he/she certifies this, then hereditary problems may not be a concern for you. If not and your Bichon acquires one of these disease, you will not be reimbursed by VPI. To make a plan's premium more affordable, find a company with good medical coverage, then adjust the copay and/or deductible. Will East Meadow Animal Hospital takes the insurance? Your best bet is to call the veterinary hospital directly and ask them.
