How long does a homeowners insurance refund take to process?

Canceling GAP and life insurance?

  • My father purchased a 2010 Honda Pilot on August 22, 2009. Included in the purchase was a life insurance and a GAP. He went to his bank and got a better interest rate on the the loan so he took the loan from the bank and paid in full the dealers loan. On or around September 8, 2009 he received a letter from the dealers finance, letting him know that they had received the full payment and that if he wanted to cancel any insurance to go to the dealer and show the letter that stated that he had paid in full. My father and I went to the dealer on September 18, 2009 to cancel both the GAP and the life insurance, the financier said that he would process it right way. Unfortunately neither my father nor I asked for a copy of any documentation that was going to be processed the financier said that it would take six to eight weeks for processed to be finalized. Yesterday November 18, 2009. I contacted both the life insurance and the GAP companies and both tell me that they have not received and documentation. I have contacted the person at the dealers finance that said that he would process it right away but he is giving me the run around he claims that he sent the paper work to another person that takes care of that process but I am not able to get in contact with her. What can my father and I do? If I process any documentation on my own at this point he will not be able to get a full refund.

  • Answer:

Call the owner of the dealership and talk to them. If he/she won't help, contact the Better Business Bureau and write a letter to the car company's regional representative. Given the current auto sales slump, dealers don't need any bad publicity. The reason you are getting the run around is that the person whop sold you the GAP and life insurance probably works on commission and once the policies are cancelled, they will claw back at least a portion of that commission. Make sure that whoever processes the cancellation pre-dates it back to the day you paid off the original loan.
