What is the best homeowners insurance?

Anyone know what insurance company will approve homeowners insurance for Mastiffs in New York State?

  • I rent on a 380 some acre farm in New York State. I am told that the landlord could not get home owners insurance because of my dog and I have to get rid of him because of the liability. I don't want to. He is a mastiff and a VERY protective one at that if someone comes on the property and he is tied up on the chain (he barks a lot and can look viscious. But once someone is inside he is okay friendly and ready to play. Except one wouldnt know it by viewing him from outside. An insurance agent came onto the property (he was chained) and of course he was very vocal. Scared the crap out of him. But we ALWAYS keep him on a chain. Does anyone know of homeowners insurance available in New York State for this breed of dog, or of another option available. We do not want to have to move because we have a boy in school and we love it here. Any no kill pet shelters or anyone who wants a lovable funny (somewhat quirky) Cane Corso Mastiff>

Of course there are rescue organizations out there, but your question is asking about homeowners insurance. Start calling around to local independent agents, they might have a company who will take it. I happen to know a company that will take your dog; since I represent them (as an independent agent), I don't like the conflict of interest associated with recommending companies I represent. That being said, ask for a carrier that focuses on high net worth individuals. There are 3-4 out there that are really good, I know the one I represent will take any breed. The premium will be 50% more than a standard policy, but the coverage is amazing. Sorry, I just refuse to recommend (or discredit) companies by name. The comments stated by everyone else were entirely correct; your dog has a proclivity for causing damage in the event of an attack, the protective tendencies do not actually help your case. As someone mauled by a dog (while I was sitting on the floor in the living room at age 5) that had protective tendencies and was on the same list as mastiffs, you do really need to watch out with that one.

All it takes is just 1 bite and you will be forced to put this dog down. Google Mastiff Rescue and should find many to take and find a home. good luck

Sorry, but that's not going to happen. And it is precisely your dog's 'protective behaviors' which insures that you will not find an insurer which will cover him. Dog owners seem to think that, because their pet is lovable and docile most of the time, he will not bite or attack. WRONG ! Every pit bull who has viciously attacked has had an owner who thinks like you do. Prepare to get rid of the dog, or prepare to move elsewhere. (However, that insurance problem will follow you no matter where you go.)

well i have a cane corso who is like that and my land lord has stat farm i dont no why you would have any prob anyway if there is no bite history. upstate and im guessing thats where you are is not like the city with dogs its more of a live and let live thing, what county are you in a lot of rules go county by county but i would think that it would not be to hard to show that he is safe if he is safe. if you really want to keep him take him to a local trainer or something and get a note saying he is not dangerous. and im looking to get a friend for my cane corso so if you do need to fined a home for your dog email me [email protected]

So you're saying, your dog is very protective - ie, very likely to bite someone on premises like the meter reader or mail delivery person. The problem is, HOMEOWNERS insurance only covers OWNER occupied properties - it won't do your landlord any good AT ALL, to find a HOMEOWNERS company. Additionally, he might not want to pay an extra $500 or $1,000, to switch to a company just to let a tenant keep a dog whom the tenant thinks might bite a stranger trying to get on site, to take the chance that your dog WILL bite, and it would raise ALL his rates for years!! I think you'll have to find a Mastiff Rescue organization in your area.
