Can I move out of state and still collect unemployment insurance?

Would I be able to collect (Federal) unemployment insurance if I move to another state?

  • I am currently collecting unemployment benefits right now. I'm in Kansas right now and I recently lost my job and was thinking about moving back to California. I was wondering if I could still collect the unemployment benefits if I decide to move out of state. So would I be able to collect (Federal) unemployment insurance if I move to another state?

  • Answer:

Federal unemployment insurance does not exist. All unemployment benefits, even if funded by the federal government, are distributed by the state. You would probably be able to collect some unemployment benefits. Either: a) You would transfer your claim to California and collect from the California government, or b) You would continue to collect from Kansas even though you were not there. The one thing that you would not do would be to "collect (Federal) unemployment insurance", because no one does, in any state.

There is no federal unemployment program. If you move back to California, you'd have to reapply - and requalify - in California.

There is no federal unemployment insurance. Each state administers a plan for workers in it's state. Contact your unemployment office in Kansas to find a reliable answer.
