Must I now get health insurance from my employer?

How do I get health insurance comproble to what my employer now provides without paying too much?

  • i will be on disability soon and will need health insurance for myself and my husband we are 61 and 62 years old. We will need good health coverage but prices and plans vary so much we would like to know how we can get decent coverage without paying 8 to 900.00 a month

  • Answer:

In most states, someone who is over 60 and going on disability cannot get health insurance without paying more than that. The only way that you could get insurance at the same prices as someone who is 23 and is not disabled would be to move to a state where everyone from age 19 to age 64 must be charged the same prices, by law, such as New York.

You can contact to insurance companies and ask to them for their business plan.

Well, with your employer, they average the older, sicker workers with the younger, healthy workers. So bad news. With one of you on disability, that person flat out isn't going to get private health insurance, at under $2,000 a month, unless your state has a high risk health pool, with no waiting line. If you WERE perfectly healthy, a good low/no deductible plan, at your ages, would cost about $800 to $1000 per month, PER PERSON. $900 a month - $450 per person, with one person disabled, and both people over 60, is NOT a realistic price, unless you're willing to take on a $10,000 deductible. And even then, you might have a very hard time finding it for the disabled person. But once you qualify for SSDI, you qualify for Medicare - which of course, is dirt cheap (because it's taxpayer subsidized). So that's the option for the disabled person. THEN, $900 a month for the other person, IS realistic, for a good low/no deductible insurance policy.

Here are three options: COBRA – If you qualify for COBRA coverage, you will be able to continue under your employer’s health insurance plan for up to 18 months, at your own expense. This means you will be paying the portion of your monthly premium that was formerly paid by your employer on top of your own portion. Many people find COBRA coverage prohibitively expensive, but it’s a good option for those with pre-existing medical conditions that may not qualify for coverage on their own. Buy Coverage on Your Own – Depending on the state in which you live, it may be difficult to qualify for coverage on your own, since you’re on disability. It will depend on the laws in your state, the nature of your condition, and your medical history. I would recommend working through a licensed agent that represents multiple carriers in your state. It doesn’t cost anything extra to work through a licensed agent and an agent can help you understand which insurers are more likely to accept you for coverage. You can find a local agent in your phone book or work with an online agent like eHealthInsurance. Government Options – If it turns out that you cannot afford COBRA and don’t qualify for individual or family coverage on your own, it may be time to look at the government options available in your area. I recommend contacting the non-profit Foundation for Health Coverage Education ( http://www.coverageforall.org ) to learn more.

Just go on-line....you'll probably end up at 'einsurance'..........anyway, they have a long list of health insurance providers you can select from. Just remember, the lower the deductible - the higher the cost. I pay $395 a month (with a yearly $2500 deductible) just for myself.....don't know what the costs for 2 are.....

For the first 18 months you will be eligible for COBRA which will be the same coverage you have at your current job. Getting coverage at your age is going to be expensive especially with a disability.

You need to find an insurance broker to help you. YOU will likely go on COBRA due to the disability. Your husband hopefully is healthy enough to get coverage on his own.
