What reputable health insurance companies are out there?

In the market looking for health insurance. I need tips and any suggestions about reputable companies?

  • I am a first time shopper in the market for health insurance and am "lost" about where I can or who I should go with. For you experienced people out there, any tips? Suggestions? I appreciate the help!

  • Answer:

Your options are going to vary depending on where you live, your age, and your health history – so it’s hard to make any specific recommendations without knowing more. That said, I’d recommend that you work with a licensed agent (either online or off). It doesn’t cost anything extra to work with an agent and one that represents multiple insurers in your area can help you get a better view of what’s available. Some licensed online agents (like eHealthInsurance) will let you compare different plans side by side, read customer reviews, and apply for coverage online. To get started with some basic tips and definitions, check out the online health insurance buyer’s guide we published here: http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/individual-health-insurance/resources/buyers-guide To go a little more in-depth, you can also download or request a free printed copy of our new book, ‘Individual Health Insurance For Dummies’ here: http://guide.ehealthinsurance.com/ Hope that helps.

Contact a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area. Insurance companies do not write policies in every state, so any suggestions you get here may not even be available to you. As for the best policy - every insurance company has a policy that is best for somebody and no insurance company has policies that are best for everybody. That is why a good agent will contract with every company. There is no charge using an agent, and they can explain what you get with the policies in your state.

No companies sell insurance to residents of all 50 states. You have to get insurance from a company that sells to residents of your state, or move. If you are willing to move to any state, so that you can get insurance from the best company, even though you have to move to do that, then post your question again and say that you are willing to move to whichever state is the one with the best insurance. If you are not willing to move, then most your question again, say which state is where you live, and ask for suggestions about companies that sell to residents of that state. I do not have time to list companies for all 50 states. You only live in one, so you can only get that the insurance that is available in that state.

This is not the right place to get recommendations for health insurance. First of all, states have different companies and plans at different prices. Even if we knew what state you are in, it would not help unless we lived there. In my state of Calilf. what they have in SoCal is not in NorCal. I suggest you consult in person or by phone with an independent insurance agent who is familiar with the insurers and their plans that best fits your needs.

Sounds like "do it yourself" insurance is a bad idea for you. Find a local broker, who can walk you through the process, and explain coverages and options in YOUR state, for YOUR needs. You can locate one at www.iiaba.net
