How to host a festival in my community?

What type of bond do I need to host an event in a public space, like a park or community center?

  • I want to organize a festival and know that I need a bond, but what kind of bond is this?

  • Answer:

You don't need ANY type of bond. You need GENERAL LIABILITY COVERAGE. Not a bond. Insurance. Bonds and insurance are two completely different things. A surety bond, is a guarantee from an insurance company, that you won't steal money from the named person. A performance bond, is a guarantee from the insurance company, that you'll do what the contract says. What you need, is general liability insurance coverage.

If you need a bond, it will probably be one to guarantee you clean up the place when you are done and otherwise observe all the rules and regs. The exact requirements are found in whatever license or permit the jurisdiction (city, county) gives you, or in the application for the permit. The bond basically says that you, as the PRINCIPAL, will do what you are supposed to do. The entity that holds the bond is the obligee. The company that issues the bond is the surety. If you fail to live up to the agreement, the obligee may claim for the amount of the bond. The surety pays off, and THEN COMES AFTER YOU. For such things as festivals and events, the amount of the bond will probably be $5,000 or less. The premium might be $100.00. More than likely, the bond can be issued right in the agent's office. All you need to do is tell the insurance agent what the city or county wants; often the city/county gives you a form to which the surety's bond is attached - and your're done. Hope that helps. EDIT: The bond will not respond to claims (suits) for injurt or damage. For that, you'll need insurance. However, you may be REQUIRED to carry insurance, and the bond guarantees that you will. If you don't, then the city claims under the bond, and the surety comes after you for what they paid.

You'll need insurance and possibly a bond. Who is requesting the bond and for what purpose?
