For which of the following would major medical coverage be useful?

Can and employeer make me wait until the 1st of the following month for health coverage?

  • My company offered me health coverage after 90 days when I took the job, but when 90 days was up (the 27th of December ) they made me wait until January first to cover me. Meanwhile I was in the emergency room on December 30th. Can my emploeer really make me wait until the first when stating a 90 day policy? I was under the impression I would have been covered but my insurance company said I'm not. Is there anything I can do?

  • Answer:

Yes,they can set the start date more than ninety days after if that is their stated policy for all employees. You probably failed to read the fine print. You could appeal it but you're not likely to get anywhere.

Most insurance policies typically do go by calendar month. Sorry.

Yes, this is normal. There is nothing you can do.

Nothing you can do at this stage. You were not covered, and it is VERY typical for new hires to be added to insurance coverage at the beginning of each month. There is no guarantee that you will be added EXACTLY in 90 days.

Does the company have a written employee manual? And what does it say about coverage? A company can do most anything in regards to waiting periods for benefits, as long as they are applied equally and consistently.
