California. I quit my job. Can I get unemployment benefits?
-
Hi I am in California. I have been working for this company for years now doing job A (Excellent reviews). I have a job description for Job A. Job A is no more and now employer says I have to do Job B with no training. Job B is different than Job A. There are deliverables for Job B coming up. Other groups keep on asking me stuff related to Job B, asking me for deliverables, don't know what to do.I tell manager about not having any training for Job B and that I need training to be able to do job B correctly. Manager ignores request and still asks to deliver (Deadline was 1 week away). Pressure builds, don't know what I am doing (No training for job B). Stress is huge. My health starts to suffer. I quit. Another employee in my department does the same thing. Can I apply for unemployment benefits?

If you quit, you cannot get unemployment. (if that was the case, we'd all quit our jobs and live on unemployment for a while..duh) And it doesn't even matter why you quit. You can only get unemployment if you were fired.

Sorry, you quit. That disqualifies you.

No. You have to be fired or layed off from a job to collect unemployment. You quit, so you blew that chance out of the water. In California, I seriously doubt there is money to pay unemployment to many people at all.
Stick it out. Either you'll learn or you'll get fired for not being able to do Job B - which will allow you to collect unemployment (you weren't hired to do Job B, you weren't even asked if you knew how, and firing you for not being able to do it, without training you, is unreasonable.)

Yes, you can apply and receive unemployment benefits simply by applying for eligibility. The state agency then checks your records and notifies your previous employer of the benefit request. The employer has the option to contest your request and a hearing would then be scheduled. In many situations company policy is such that they only confirm that you were an employee and the start and termination dates. If your claim is not contested then you will receive benefits. Just don't put down the reason why you left, simply apply for benefits and keep it simple.
