How to keep your series 7 license active?

Keep Series 7 license current?

  • I earned a Series 7 license at my previous employer - I left the company in August 2007, and have until August 2009 to find sponsorship for the license before it expires. How do I go about having a firm park the license to avoid it expiring?

  • Answer:

You can't. You'd have to transfer it to a company, but you'll pay fees and actively use it (per se). Nobody is going to take the liability just to hold it. The aggravation and cost to do that would warrant just taking the test again if you needed to.

Unfortunately, you can't. It's not even about someone taking "the liability" to hold it. It's a FINRA rule ... you can't have the license active without being affiliated with a member firm, and if you're not affiliated with a member firm for more than 2 years (out of the industry rule), then it's not an option for you. I have a Series 7. Yack ... would hate to take that again. Maybe if you want to keep it you should get back into the industry, as this is your only option for hanging on to it. My best to you.
