What does an epidural cost without insurance?

What is the average cost to deliver a child without insurance?

  • What is the average cost to deliver a child without insurance?

  • Answer:

My midwife charges $3200, including ALL prenatal care and testing, and a homebirth. My OB (her backup) charges $3600 for his services for the hospital birth, which also includes all prenatal services, but not the ultrasound or optional testing, if it's not a c-section. But if you get anesthesia, that's $900 more, for the anesthesiologist and epidural. And the hospital charges roughly $3500 for the mother's stay for two days, with meals, semi private room and nursing care, and about $1,000 for the baby's stay, including diapers, formula, and nursing care. But it's much safer for both the mom, and the baby, to do the home birth with a midwife. And it's easier, more relaxing than in the hospital. IMO. And I've researched it.

wow! That sucks. You should find a clinic/hospital nearby that offers services to the general public without insurance. No hospital will send you away if you come in, in a situation like that.

I've worked in health Insurance for many years, what I'd do if i were you is ask the facility, anesthesiologist, pathologist and physicians what rate they charge for a walk in with no insurance, typically they bill the insurance companies more than they would someone who just walks in off the street, I've seen claims from between 3 to 8 thousand dollars and that's with no complications. Also, when you do get the bill, call the various billing agencies and ask them how much they might be willing to write off, you'll be surprised at how much they will help if they feel that your doing your best to try and pay them some money. Good Luck !

It's about 120 for the doctor visits and 1200 for the delivery. If you stay for two days in the hospital after a vaginal delivery the bill will be around 5000. You'll pay more for a c-section and need to stay for a week in the hospital. I'd advise you to look into state-funded insurance. It should be free or you may have a small co-pay of about 20 bucks. Look in the phone book under government listings for human services, this would b the place to start. Babies aren't cheap and neither are doctors. Your child deserves the best care you can get. It will also need immunizations and well-baby at least 10 times during the first year. Get state funded medicial insurance. They will take care of your bills while you are pregnant and then they add on the baby after it is born and they'll pay for your ob/gyn appointments. It's a good deal and everyone wins.

My c-sections were approx $20,000 each. I do think it is best to deliver in the hospital, because if I didn't, my 1st born would not be here. He went into fetal distress & his heart stopped before the emergency c-section. Also, his cord was wrapped around his body several times & it was short so even if I did deliver him (which I probably wouldn't have been able to since he was wedged in my pelvis), he could have torn the placenta out before it detached naturally & I could have hemmorhaged. I don't mean to scare you, you just should know things that are possible. If your hospital has a good birthing center, you can have a midwife deliver your child. Our birthing center has rooms that look like real bedrooms with all the medical equipment hidden in wooden cabinets & also have tubs for water births. If your hospital is anything like that, then you can have the birth you want with all the medical assistance you need there. That is the safest way IMO. Have you contacted your state for any assistance? They will probably be able to help you more than anyone here.
