Photography vs. photography and design "insurance"?

  • im startng a studio, i want to call it a "studio" in general but the insurance company looked at my web site and are calling me a design as well as a photo studio and want to charge me 2600 vs. 600 if i am just a photo studio any brokers wanna shed some light as to the difference in liability

    Not sure if this applies to you, but in addition to the above if you are in ‘design’ you could run the risk of professional indemnity claims for copyright infringement. e.g. You design a logo for Bob’s Builders…. 6 months later ‘Gofukem & Howe’ sue Bob claiming his logo is very similar to their client 'Rob Construction' and could they please have £1m in damages for copyright infringement and 'passing off'. Guess who Bob is going to sue and whose insurers will have to pay out…. Yup you got it…yours. Sound stupid ? yup…. But I’ve known it happen. That doesn't happen when taking happy snaps of babies... hence the difference in price.

Studio - You come to my place of business, I set you up, take your photo, print the photo on whatever sized paper and present the photo to you (maybe framed, maybe not). If the photo is ugly it's because your ugly. Design - I do all of the above, then I airbrush the scar over your right eye out, digitally remove the mole at the end of your nose, digitally turn your spare tire into a small bicycle inner tube, digitally shrink your butt so that it fits into the photo, digitally place you in Tahiti instead of Toledo and then create a magazine cover/brochure/article with the new you on it. If it's ugly it's because I didn't do a good enough job doing what you asked. You then sue me because you missed a deadline or you had to redo everything with another firm.
