Are there any programs that can help me get insurance on my car?

Im a single mom and very low income. Im working on starting the JET program through the sate of MI to get cash assistance but I do not have a car to drive to get there. My dad has been allowing me to drive his beater car to get to work but its not going to last much longer and its supposed to be my sisters car and I don't want to be responsible for breaking it. I have my own car but my birthday passed in March and it does not have insurance on it so I could not put current tabs on it. Ive been trying to save the money to get it up and running again but with no help from my husband who I am separated from with caring for our daughter I cant save a dime. I need to know if there are any programs out there that can at least help me get the insurance on my car so I can get the tabs and get it working again?
