Is this good enough to get new appliances from home insurance?
-
The oven that we currently have is starting to heat up the door so much that we can barely stand to touch it. I actually got a burn from the handle just opening it. The house was built in 1977 and I'm sure that the oven is original to the house (the whole kitchen has that weird green color from the 60's/70's); the oven is an "in-wall" oven. It will keep AROUND the temperature you set it at if it is below 350, and higher and it will go up or down about 50 degrees. Our stove appears to be original to the house as well. The thing with our stove is that it takes forever for it to heat up anything. It will take about 20 minutes for it to heat up a pan to a near boil. It's not really a safety concern with the stove, but it is an inconvenience. We are worried about the oven starting a fire since it is encased in wood. Both of the appliances are electric, and are made by GE. Do you think (mainly talking about the oven) if we tell the home insurance company about the oven we could possibly get a new one?

Answer:
What do you mean, "good enough"? Homeowners insurance doesn't cover maintenance stuff, it doesn't replace worn out appliances, it doesn't upgrade you. Homeowners covers sudden, accidental, unexpected things that happen to your house - like the oven blows up and causes fire damage. Damage to the defective oven itself - not covered. Only the fire damage to everything else. Yeah, it's probably moderately likely, that if you continue to neglect the oven, it's going to start a fire. You need to get a new one. But insurance isn't going to pay for it.

your insurance is not going to pay for new appliances--that up to you. if you notice that there is a fire hazard and you do not attempt to correct it (ie--buy new appliances)--then you are at fault, your insurance will not pay the claim, they will probably drop you or raise your rates thru the roof. appliances have a certain shelf life--just buy new ones

Home insurance will not cover getting a new stove or oven. The problems you are having are maintenance issues and not insurance issues. However, if the oven does start a fire most likely insurance will pay for the burnt house.

I very much doubt it as it is just through wear and tear and is certainly not covered. If it was we would get the insurance company to pay for all of our new appliances.
Insurance companies don't buy appliances unless a tree falls on it (or some other peril). Sounds like you need to buy a new oven.

1. You original question was whether you can get new appliances from your insurance. The answer is: No. Definitely not. Insurance does not pay for replacement of things that require replacement because they are old, because they have stopped working properly, because they gradually or slowly become worse over time. Insurance pays only for things that have been damaged in a specific incident, by a covered peril, on a specific date. Insurance also does not pay for anything that was already wrong with the house when you bought it or when you got the insurance, or both. Since it already had these appliances, anything wrong with them (other than damage from weather, a fire, burglary, etc., that happened after you bought the house and after you got the insurance) is not covered. 2. There is no need to touch the oven handle directly with your skin. You can avoid burns by wearing potholders or by using an object with a hook on the end to pull on the handle. 3. Your second question was whether you can tell the insurance about the oven and get a new one. The answer is: Yes. Definitely yes. After you tell the insurance company, you can get a new one the same way as if you did not tell the insurance company: Buy purchasing a new one, yourself, with your money. 4. I am not convinced that the oven is really a fire hazard. In-wall ovens in the 1970's could get up to 500 degrees or more when using the "broil" or "self-clean" features. It should not have been installed in a way that would allow the wood to catch fire simply because the oven temperature reached 400 degrees when set for 350. 5. There is no need to replace the entire stove. Replacing the burners and/or the wiring should be enough to fix the problem.

maintenance is not covered by insurance replacing your oven is called maintenance. you know there is a problem with it, if you don't replace it and you have a fire, it's highly likely that insurance will not pay for your damages = because the fire was due to your LACK of maintenance. the stove is also not covered by insurance. if you would like a new stove go by one, this would be called maintenance also. also, would the oven or stove even cost more than the deductible of the insurance?

Two points: 1. You have a deductible on your home insurance. Probably $500 to $1,000 I am sure you don't have a $0 deductible - these policies are extremely expensive 2. If you make a claim, your home insurance premiums will go up. Some insurance companies will even cancell you (ask anyone) 3. You cannot get the insurance to pay just because an applican CAN catch on fire. You have to wait for the fire to happen and destroy your home first. If this were the case, people would be getting new appliances from their home insurance. Home insurance would cost more than anyone could ever possibly afford
