How long does it take to build credit?

How long does it take for a person with no credit score - to build up a good credit score?

  • I have my very first credit card in the mail, it will be here within the week. I have no credit. I'm not in debt, and I will use my credit card and pay it off in full each month. ---> Realistically, how long will it take for my credit score to be considered good?

  • Answer:

You will have to use that card for at least 6 months before it even begins to count in your FICO score. In 12 months you will have a score but it won't be that good. It take YEARS to build good credit. Even if you get a FICO score in the 700 range, you my still be turned down for credit because your history is too limited. You need at least 24 months of consistent, on time payment history and several open, active lines of credit to get to the decent credit range.

People with thin files and short histories fall into a special scoring bucket. You will fall into the "good" category provided you use the card responsibly and pay your bills on time. Lenders will offer more credit once you have a longer history with a greater number of satisfactory credit lines.
