How does Prepaid Debit Card Work?

• So I've been having trouble getting a debit card, since my parents told me the activation fee is something crazy like 20~40 bucks. Just yesterday I went to Vons, and saw these Prepaid Debit Cards sold for around 4 bucks. I was with a friend at the time and he told me that all you had to do is get it activated from the cashier, give them some money that they can put in the card, and Voila! you get a debit card! I thought that his explanation was not very clear, so I decide to post the question here. How does the Prepaid Debit Card work? Do I have to pay anything monthly in order to keep it? How long can I keep one?

  Debit cards don't cost money to open their are no fees on them. Your parents must be saying that to prevent you from getting an account. To get a debit card all you do is go to any local bank and ask to setup a free checking account. They will open the account for you and send you a debit card in the mail. It's free to use anywhere. When you want to use it you just deposit your money in the account and your good to go!. The prepaid cards cost money to activate - it cost you money from your pocket as a fee to open the card. You go to the cashier and tell them you want to deposit a certain amount of money on the card and they will put it on the card and your done. It doesn't makes sense to get a prepaid with fees when you can get a simple checking account for free!
